Meet Steph – A Passionate Fostering Social Worker at Caritas Care
At Caritas Care, we’re proud to introduce Steph, one of our dedicated Supervising Social Workers. Steph brings a unique perspective to her role, having been a foster carer herself with Catholic Caring Services, now known as Caritas Care. Her experience as a foster carer gives her deep insights into the needs of both children and foster families, making her an invaluable part of our team.
Steph’s Fostering Journey with Caritas Care
Steph’s fostering journey began in December 2000 when she and her husband were approved as foster carers. With three birth children of their own, they became a fostering family, welcoming their first placement—a young person who stayed with them for four years. The decision to foster wasn’t made overnight; it was a journey of contemplation and preparation, but ultimately, it was a life-changing decision that Steph has never regretted.
During her time as a foster carer, Steph worked part-time as a Teaching Assistant, balancing her professional responsibilities with her commitment to her family and foster children. Encouraged by her own social worker to consider a career in social work, Steph decided to pursue her passion. Despite facing personal challenges, including the end of her marriage, Steph’s determination led her to university, where she earned her BA in Social Work at the age of 44—a remarkable achievement she is immensely proud of.
From Foster Carer to Social Worker at Caritas Care
After gaining her social work qualification, Steph held various roles, including working with the Local Authority Fostering Team in Cumbria. However, when she saw an opportunity to join Caritas Care, she knew she had to apply. For Steph, it was a chance to give back to the organisation that had supported her own journey. Eleven years later, she remains a vital part of the Caritas Care team, driven by the same passion and commitment that inspired her career change.
The Importance of Matching Foster Carers with the Right Social Workers
At Caritas Care, we believe that the success of fostering placements depends on strong relationships between foster carers and social workers. Steph understands the importance of these relationships and works diligently to ensure that each foster carer is paired with a social worker who is the right fit for them. This personalised approach ensures stability for the children and helps foster carers feel supported and understood.
Steph’s experience and dedication shine through in her work. She supports her foster carers through challenges, encourages them to recognise their strengths, and helps them grow in their roles. Her ability to connect with foster carers and understand their needs makes her a trusted partner in their fostering journey.
Caritas Care: A Supportive and Dedicated Team
One of the many reasons Steph loves working at Caritas Care is the strong sense of teamwork and community. The fostering staff team is close-knit, with many members having been with the charity for several years. This stability is crucial for building lasting relationships with foster carers and providing consistent support.
The team at Caritas Care works together through the highs and lows, celebrating successes and offering support to each other during challenging times. This collaborative environment not only strengthens the team but also enhances the support provided to foster carers and children.
Making a Difference in Children’s Lives
Steph’s work at Caritas Care goes beyond the day-to-day responsibilities of a social worker. She is actively involved in recruiting new foster carers, guiding them through the assessment process, and ensuring they receive the support they need to succeed. Her dedication to matching the right children with the right foster carers helps create stable, nurturing environments where children can thrive.
Caritas Care is committed to providing foster carers with the time, support, and resources they need to make informed decisions about fostering. By taking the time to build strong relationships and offer tailored support, Caritas Care ensures that foster carers are well-prepared for the rewarding journey ahead.
