George and Anne-Marie talk about their fostering journey, being a male foster carer and transferring agencies

George and Ann Marie have been dedicated foster carers with Caritas Care for over a decade. Previously with an Independent Fostering Agency, they faced challenges that made them consider quitting fostering altogether. However, the decision to transfer to Caritas Care, a not-for-profit charity in Lancashire, was a turning point that reignited their passion for fostering.

George shares their journey: “We were foster carers with an Independent Fostering Agency but became disheartened by the inconsistency of staff and social workers. The constant turnover affected both us and the foster children. Additionally, being matched with children far from our home in Lancashire was challenging, with long school runs and meetings.”

“The decision was clear: either quit fostering or find a local agency. Discovering Caritas Care, which we initially thought was solely an adoption agency, was a game-changer. A quick look at their website led us to a call with Steph, who would become our social worker. Her warmth and understanding were immediate.”

Transferring agencies took time, but George and Ann Marie found it worthwhile. “Caritas Care’s low staff turnover was crucial for us. After meeting Steph, we knew we had found the right place. Though the process took five months, it was the best decision. Caritas Care feels like family, especially during COVID, when their support was outstanding.”

George emphasises the importance of support: “Our previous agency felt corporate and cold. Social workers came and went, leaving us feeling undervalued. In contrast, Caritas Care’s support network is exceptional. From management to social workers, everyone makes us feel appreciated.”

“During tough times, Caritas Care is there, providing the necessary support and information. This level of care fosters healthy relationships and makes us feel like part of a family, not just another number.”

George and Ann Marie’s fostering journey with Caritas Care has been fulfilling. George, who had no biological children, brought up Ann Marie’s daughters and later realised fostering was a natural next step. “We missed having children around. Fostering filled that gap and allowed us to use our parenting skills to make a positive impact.”

Reflecting on their experience, George shares a touching story of a foster child who reconnected with them years later, expressing gratitude and fond memories. “This reaffirmed the positive influence we had on his life and made us proud of our fostering journey.”

George advocates for the importance of male foster carers. Networking with other male foster carers at Caritas Care has been valuable. “It’s beneficial to share experiences and support each other. Men bring unique strengths to fostering, and mentoring other men interested in fostering has been rewarding.”

“Caritas Care respects and values these differences, which is why they are an outstanding agency. The decision to transfer to Caritas Care was the best one we made.”
