Jon and Jean’s journey into adoption was not a decision made lightly. Already parents to a biological child, they felt their family had space to welcome another member through adoption.
Their desire to expand their family was not just about growing in numbers but about extending their love and care to a child. Little did they know, this decision would open a new chapter in their lives, one filled with challenges, but also immense joy and fulfilment.
Having a birth child already meant that Jon and Jean had experienced the wonders and responsibilities of parenthood. Initially they didn’t consider adopting an older child but soon started looking at all the options available – and what they could offer a child of a school age.
“As the journey went on, we became more open minded, and open to any age, as long as the children were younger than our birth child. We started looking at the pros and cons of it all and came to the conclusion that an older child would have been better for our family and our circumstances”.
They understood that adopting a child, especially one who was of school age, would bring about a unique set of circumstances. They were aware that older children in the adoption system often faced additional challenges in finding an adoptive family. Yet, they believed that their family was equipped with the love and support needed to provide a nurturing environment for their child. They understood that the child they were welcoming into their home might have experienced trauma or instability in their past. However, they were committed to find out all about their child and how to provide a safe and loving environment where the child could heal and thrive.
Unlike adopting a baby, adopting an older child meant that Jon and Jean had some insight into the child’s personality and needs from the beginning, which helped them prepare for the transition. Throughout the adoption process, Jon and Jean worked closely with professionals who provided guidance and support every step of the way. From social workers to therapists and school representatives, they relied on the network to get to know their adopted child, and to help navigate the complexities of adoption and ensure that their family was well-prepared for the new addition. This collaborative approach not only eased their anxieties but also reinforced their belief that they were making the right decision.
As time passed, Jon and Jean witnessed the remarkable transformation in their family dynamics. The bond between their birth child and their adopted child grew stronger with each passing day. They realized that adopting an older child had been the perfect choice for them, as they could fully understand and appreciate the unique needs and experiences of their new family member.
Today, Jon and Jean’s family stands as a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the beauty of adoption. Through their journey, they have not only expanded their family but also enriched their lives in ways they could have never imagined.
